Police has Saturday revealed that it has highlighted security along the Northern bypass in Kampala following a public outcry about increasing robbery on the highway.
Several motorists have in the past days reported that they have been attacked by some rowdy gangs who throw stones at speeding cars at night prompting occupants to stop so they are robbed.
“Police territorial teams of divisions of Old Kampala, Kiira Road and Kawempe have continued conducting operations that led to arrests of hardcore criminals suspected to be behind the ongoing crimes on the Northern Bypass,” Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigire said in a Saturday statement.
According to Owoyesigire, 30 suspects were on Friday night arrested during operations conducted by police along the route.
The arrested are said to be members of the notorious “Kifeesi” criminal gang.
Police reports indicate that this form of criminality has been growing over time and in some incidents, the robbers have killed their victims using blunt objects.
Taxi drivers who ply this road from Namboole, Bweyogerere to Busega told ChimpReports that criminals have also adopted a habit of disguising as passengers who hail a taxi, enter and rob the people inside.
Several black spots have been mapped out along the highway for motorists to watch out and these include Namungoona flyover, Bwaise around National water and sewerage treatment plant, Kyebando interchange, Kisaasi and Nalya roundabout.
The minister of security Gen. Jim Muhwezi has also assured the public that Kampala Metropolitan police have deployed motorised security patrols to manage the situation.
He also urged whoever is attacked to report immediately, noting that police is now in position to respond very fast.
