CHIMPREPORTS

Kampala Police used tear gas and rubber bullets on Wednesday afternoon to disperse unruly students at Makerere University Business School (MUBS) who were protesting the manner in which the election of the Guild President was being conducted.

Supporters of National Unity Platform (NUP) accused administrators of trying to rig the election against their candidate Valentine Ogwang.

Officials at the campus deny the claims, saying the violence is unacceptable .

Drama unfolded when a student grabbed a ballot box from the polling area before taking off. Other students joined the commotion.

Police and military personnel, which had been called in to secure the election exercise, responded by firing teargas to disperse the crowd.

Videos shared on social media show students falling in trenches and others crawling in the playground as police fired teargas canisters.

The race attracted six contestants.

However, the main candidates are NUP firebrand Valentine Ogwang and NRM’s Nimrod Kakayi.

NUP supporters have been aggressively using social media especially Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp to mobilize students to support their candidate.

The election has since been postponed pending communication from MUBS administration.
