Dr Monica Musenero, the Minister for Science and Technology, has defended the special mice that cost Shs8m each in an effort to generate a local Covid-19 vaccine.

She was Friday appearing before a Select Committee of Parliament that is currently investigating allegations that she misused Shs31bn for developing a Covid-19 vaccine.

Dr Musenero said the high cost of the mice is based on its scarcity which sparked a stiff competition for it.

“The media has actually named it the Musenero Mouse and there are cartoons. These are very high technology animals,” she is quoted by Daily Monitor as saying.

“Not only are they expensive but they are also not easy to get. We paid the first company and they returned our money and they said we can’t give you because they are on very high demand. Shs8m, actually that is cheap.”

Ntungamo municipality MP Yona Musinguzi is leading the inquiry into the minister following a directive by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Anita Among.

Among instituted a committee chaired by the Ibanda North legislator Xavier Kyooma to probe the allegations.
